Donegal Town BC u14 Boys take to the big stage this weekend. Its every underage team in the countries ambition to qualify from their Region and go to the AICC's - The All Ireland Club Championships. Its a fantastic honor to represent your Club, County and Region and this weekend sees our lads head off on Friday evening to Gormanstown in County Meath for what will be a fantastic weekends Basketball. 24 Teams have qualified and every year depending on how Clubs from each Region finish ranks your team into A,B or C for the following year. We are in the B section which will see 8 teams battle it out for the All Ireland Title. WE have some big clubs to contend with and in our section we will play Kerry club St Marys Castleisland a club steeped in basketball, Old Leighlin BC from Carlow will represent the South East and Dublin Giants Killester BC all on Saturday. Win all 3 games and its the last 4 which would be fantastic but regardless on how many wins we will play games Sunday to see where we rank and finish outa the 8 teams in our section. We will face off against the teams from the other group which includes some massive clubs with a fantastic pedigree like Belfast Star one of the countries top clubs, Virginia side Cavan Lakers, Limerick Lions and midlands powerhouses Portlaoise Panthers. All fantastic clubs with great pedigree in the game. Its a new experience for our lads but with Coach Kennedy having been there before hopefully we can go well. Gonna be some great games over the weekend so best of luck to our lads enjoy the experience and have a ball....
WE wish our U14 Boys & Coaches the best of luck as they are off to the ALL Ireland Club Championships this weekend
All Ireland Club Championships
This coming weekend Donegal Town BC U14 Boys take to the road and head to Gormanstown Co Meath to represent County Donegal and the North West Region for the All Ireland Club Championships. This is a fantastic honour for the club and a first outing to the prestigious event for this group. We have struggled to get boys teams away at this level for an age indeed it was Coach Kennedy who was last to take a DTBC team to Winning the Region at either u14 or u16 as thats the ages that a Regional win means going to the Aiccs. John’s son Dylan and his Stat man Oisin Gillespie were part of that team almost 7 years ago. Our lads have got there courtesy of winning the Region on the last day with a winners takes all game against Sligo All Stars which they won 56-34 to win the League. The Super Cup final came next and again DTBC dispatched All Stars to take all the silverware on offer in the Region for the season. Further success came last week for the group as they won their Schools Regional Title meaning they also reach the Schools All Ireland Play offs a sure sign boys basketball in the Club and School are on the way up.
The team is coached by John Kennedy one of Donegal's most decorated Basketball Coaches and his wealth of experience is a real bonus to these lads starting out on their basketball journey’s. John has coached all the grades in the club as well as taking plenty of Titles into Colaiste Cholmcille over the years and the improvement on this group the last season has been fantastic to watch under Johns expert guidance. He is backed up by Assistant Coach and team Manager Garry Prendiville who has been a trojan worker since joining the club a few season’s back. Indeed Garry has been with this group winning Regional Titles at U12 along with fellow coach Paul McHugh which has sent these lads into u14s really ready to compete. Oisin Gillespie is a welcome sight around the club as we have put loads of lads through our system with very few coming back to lend a hand but Oisin has and fair play to him it’s much appreciated by the club and hopefully more lads of his generation put their hands up to help the club keep moving forward..
Our lads will play in the B Division courtesy of some strong finishes by our u16 girls teams the last 2 seasons at the Aiccs. With our opposition not known at the time of writing its safe to say we will have some serious challenges ahead and we wouldn't have it any other way. The Team is captained by the talented Niall Prendiville and he has shown not just great basketball skills over the season but fantastic leadership skills and being the go to man for scores when needed at vital times. Jake Graham and Daniel Quinn are the backbone of the side providing a wealth of rebounds and loads of ball for the likes of Jonathan O’Driscoll, Oisin Mogan, Shea Byrne and the impressive Leo Mcgowan to work with. With a great panel all the lads listed below will play their part this weekend. At a cost of over €3000 to send the team away this weekend we thank all those that bought lines and supported our fundraising quiz last Friday. It's fantastic to see the local community get behind the club and the team. The team leave Friday evening and will overnight stay in Gormanstown and be ready for action Saturday morning and returning after a great weekends basketball on Sunday evening. Best of luck from us all to John Garry, Oisin and the lads from all at DTBC. We have a lot of parents, Friends and club members heading down to show their support over the weekend led by club Chair Martin Carr and Secretary Martina Ryan so show your club colours and make plenty of noise for the lads…
Lastly we’d really like to congratulate 2 Donegal Clubs on their fantastic showing at the u14 Girls Aicc’s last weekend as Blaze and Mulroy both won their grades taking 2 All Ireland Titles back to Donegal. Fantastic achievement and congratulations to both Mulroy Hoops and Letterkenny Blaze. Donegal Basketball is a once again on the up. Can we join them this weekend? let’s hope so….

WE have decided to revive our Camps and give our players the chance to to learn more of the skills of the game and its hoped to have similar camps at Halloween and Xmas in the coming seasons.
We want all our players to get involved and learn the crucial skills of the game that we are unable to teach in the normal team sessions. We will get each player practicing what they need to succeed in the game and a 4 day camp is the ideal way to do that. With plenty of Coaching expertise within the club we will put together a great week of learning and fun for our players at a very reasonable rate. Its essential to book your place asap as its filling up fact and places are limited. Deadline to pay up for the Camp is the 10th of April to ensure your child's place.
Players booking must pay full price regardless of how many days they do at camp
Huge Thanks to our main sponsor for the season Donegal Town Credit Union. We have been able to get our kits all in order going back to our traditional yellow & blue which look fantastic. Liam & Bernadine made the presentation to Martina & Martin. Thanks from all at DTBC...
Great to see our Mini section going so well under the guidance of Ray Rooney, Siobhan Mogan, Edith Bradfield and various helpers who are making it a great session. Starting basketball as early as you can is key to to getting the game skills to keep players in the game for a long time and this group are certainly doing that.. So if you want your child playing basketball be sure and get your name down for next season as numbers will be limited due to space. So well done to our coaches and to all the players who are having a ball on Friday nights in the Glebe NS gym.
Our u10 boys have been invited to Sligo All Stars Blitz this Sunday. At the other blitzes we attended we could take 2 teams but this time we have one team only and its a squad of 10 with 2 reserves. Understandable if some are disappointed not to be selected but we still have plenty of basketball to play with a few more blitzes and friendlies in the pipeline.
I have named the 10 players to attend and if any of these cannot attend we will open up the spaces for anyone who can replace them. All to be decided later at training. It should be a great days basketball with games against Sligo All Stars x 2, Longford Falcons, Carrick Cougars, Ballina Braves and Letterkenny Blaze. We need to be on time so any players that are playing need to be in the Mercy gym for 10am.
Team: Michael Masterson (c), Conor Griffin, Finn Gillespie, Kian Gallagher, Jay Cullen, Darragh O Donnell, Rian Downey, Iarla Cassidy, Noel Lorinyenko, James Tooher. Plus 2 reserves.
Cranwell's meet in Blaze as Former player Justin met Sister and our current u10 Girls Coach in what was a very tense meeting of the rival siblings (ha ha)
Great to see the Cranwells still involved in Basketball so many years after Deborah and Damien were involved in the set up of the club back in the mid eighties. Deborah went on to Coach, play and instill coaching structures into the club that served the club well and can be attributed to its survival 30 odd years later. Damien or as he was more widely known Buzzy was a fantastic player in the clubs early years winning numerous titles with our men's team and now that both Deborah and Buzzy live across the pond their wee sister has got involved in coaching this season taking the u10 girls and helping out with the 10 boys. Her involvement is fantastic as volunteers are so hard to get nowadays especially those that do it for the love of the game as she isn't a parent of any of our current players. Justin lives on the other side of the gap and his kids now play ball with Blaze and can be seen above. Here's a few from the vault below showing some of the Cranwells involvement in Donegal Town BC throughout the early years.
Our U16 Girls got the New year up and running as they hosted 2 clubs in a great days basketball. A great format of 2 games each with the host team DTBC playing the Blackwater Steelers first who ran out 20 point winners in the end. Then Steelers had a break and then played Belfast Phoenix in a great game where Steelers held on after a great Phoenix rally to win both their games. The last game between Phoenix and ourselves saw great start form our girls but they faded as Phoenix pulled away to win. Thanks to both teams for coming and we hope to repay and travel to them in the near future. Again it wouldn't be possible without people putting their hand up to help out. Thanks to Stephen Carty and Evan Gallagher who did the table for the 3 games while Nigel, Rosa and Darragh reffed the games very well. Thanks Lads and the sooner other people realize if they don't start to help we wont be able to continue providing basketball here in Donegal. Saturday sees our teams back into league action with 3 games at home for our u12, 14 and 16 Girls teams. Come along and show your support for our teams.
Huge Thanks to the wonderful coach Brendan Mc Coy from Liby Dynamites. A great friend to the club over the years and once again he gave a great weekends basketball to our players. Brendan took the U10s first on Friday evening and delivered a great few hours with some great drills mixed with a lot of fun to ensure an action packed few hours which all our 32 players and coaches really enjoyed. Then it was onto the U12s where 35 players where put through their paces as Brendan eased them though a fun and tasking few hours with his unique brand of coaching basketball. Progressive drills that tested the players and encouraged communication which is vital in basketball ensured another great session. And so onto Saturday as we had a mixed session of 35 players were disappointingly only half the u14 girls and half the u16 girls turned up but the u14 boys turned out in force to ensure a great mornings basketball. Again new drills and skills were introduced by Brendan and our players responded very well making it a great few hours. We hope to see Brendan back again before the end of the season as we Thank him for his time and his undoubted knowledge of the game at all levels.
Basketball blitz (Tough Cookie) in memory of my Anna Ward. Anyone who would like to play some ball or anyone who remembers Anna from basketball/school is more than welcome to come along! Spread the word please ☺ thank you! 🏀 -
Coach Mc Coy returns to the Club this weekend to give Coaching Workshops to our players, make sure you check the times for your age group and please try to be on time..
Great weekends basketball ahead as Coach Mc Coy returns to the Club to give some of his vast Knowledge of the game to our players & Coaches....
